A Bit About Bromsgrove

Bromsgrove is a small town in Worcestershire, England. It lies approximately 16 miles north east of Worcester and 13 miles south west of Birmingham City Centre. Bromsgrove is intersected by the A38 which was bypassed to the east of the town in 1980. It is very close to the M5 and the M42 and so has excellent access to the South West and North of the country.

Its railway is situated on the south side of the town and it sits at the foot of the Lickey Incline which is the steepest on the British mainline. In 1919, the Midland Railway built “Big Bertha”, a steam locomotive which was designed for banking duties to help other trains up the incline. It would attach to the rear of the train to help it up the steep incline and also ensure that carriages or coaches didn’t break away.  There are still frequent trains to Birmingham, Worcester and Hereford.

Bromsgrove is home to Bromsgrove Rugby Football Club, one of the oldest rugby union clubs in the country formed in 1872. Other leisure activities include walking and coarse fishing along the Worcester and Birmingham canal which runs close to Bromsgrove. You could hire a narrow boat from one of the hire centres and experience the Tardebigge lock flight which is the longest in Europe housing 30 locks.

A visit to Bromsgrove must include a trip to Avoncroft Museum. It is home to over 27 different structures which have been rescued and re-built. It’s spread over 19 acres and has meadows, period gardens, orchards as well as its buildings. It includes the National telephone kiosk collection! Bromsgrove is 5 miles away from the historic Hanbury Hall built in 1701 by Thomas Vernon. It is built in the William and Mary-style and boasts a mix of interiors from restored Hercules rooms and recreated Gothic corridors to the restored staircase home to wall paintings by Sir James Thornhill. Outside there are 20 acres of period gardens and 400 acres of park. The Hall hosts many events from activity days, exhibitions and open air theatre.

Bromsgrove has a 300 seated auditorium, dance studio, meeting rooms and gallery in the form of the Artrix. Its annual programme is made up of a wealth of different events such as film screenings, exhibitions, concerts, stand-up comedy gigs, drama productions and dance shows. Having such stars as singer / actor Michael Ball and Mark Williams (Arthur Weasley in the Harry Potter films) born here has obviously given the town its dramatic edge.

Bromsgrove is also close to the Lickey, Clent and Waseley Hills. All of these countryside landmarks are known for their stunning scenery and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.  Just under a million visitors are said to walk these hills every year making them Worcestershire’s most popular non-paying attraction. If you’re very lucky when you’re out walking you may see wildlife there including Fallow Deer and the Common Buzzard.

There is definitely something for everyone visiting this attractive Worcestershire town.
