Cheltenham is a regency Spa town known as the “gateway to the Cotswolds”. It is a very convenient place to stay when visiting Stratford, The Cotswolds and Oxford. It has good road and rail connections from London and the South East, Birmingham and Bristol. From these airports, Cheltenham is widely accessible from all over Great Britain.
It is widely known that the first ever natural spring was discovered in Cheltenham nearly three hundred years ago and the Spa town has welcomed vistitors to its amazing architecture and glorious gardens ever since. According to legend, a flock of pigeons were discovered on a spring at the site of what is now the Ladies College. The locals tried the water and found that it cured certain ailments. In 1788 King George III came for five weeks to take the water cure; he was followed by many distinguished figures such as Handel and Samuel Johnson. This “gift of nature” attracted many other wealthy people and the town began to thrive.
After the Second World War, Government Communications Headquarters (G.C.H.Q) was built and has become one of the most important secret surveillance centres in the West. Although steeped in history, Cheltenham has been a Britain in Bloom winner on many occasions and has been described as the “garden town of England”. Whilst touring the town, a walk along the tree-lined Promenade is a must. It is one of the finest boulevards in the country and all around the town you will see stunning floral displays in the various parks and gardens. All around you, you’ll see wonderful Regency town houses with beautiful ironwork balconies and quaint squares and terraces to sit in and watch the world go by.
Cheltenham has a few famous connections – mainly being the birthplace of the composer of The Planets, Gustav Holst. Eddie “the Eagle” Edwards was from Cheltenham and rose to fame when he came last in the 1988 Olympic men’s downhill ski jump. On a different note, Rolling Stone, Brian Jones hails from here too.
There’s a lot to do besides perusing the architecture and gardens. The Town Hall hosts a raft of events throughout the year and a visit to the Art Gallery and Museum is a must too. Cheltenham is home to both the Playhouse and Everyman theatre and there are many restaurants, clubs and bars nearby for pre theatre drinks and into the evening entertainment. The magnificent Cheltenham Racecourse, known across the world as the home of National Hunt racing hosts many fixtures including the famous Cheltenham Gold Cup. Cheltenham hosts a wide variety of festivals including music, jazz, literary and science.
You can visit other attractions close by such as Cotswold Farm Park, Cleeve Hill, Slimbridge Wetlands Centre and Minchinhampton and Rodborough Commons. Accommodation here can be in the form a relaxing break or as a base for sight- seeing and visiting the surrounding area. Whatever your choice, there are plenty of hotels, guest houses, apartments or self-catering alternatives.
