Gloucester is a city, district and county town of Gloucestershire situated in the South West of England. It lies about 32 miles from Bristol and 45 miles from Birmingham. Gloucester was founded by the Romans in AD 97 and much of its current layout can be attributed to that occupation. It developed into one of the chief settlements in Roman Britain and was granted the title of Colonia Nervia Glevensis by Emperor Nerva – the highest status a provincial town could achieve in the Roman Empire.
The Victorian era saw the completion of the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal which brought further growth to the timber industry and opened up the city to Scandinavia. The city has always benefitted from wealth that came from service industries being home to the Cheltenham and Gloucester bank. The city prospered and when railway works were built, it only became more popular as new businesses and projects evolved.
Gloucester Cathedral is a truly beautiful building and the burial place of King Edward II of England. Its cloisters as well as other parts were used for corridor scenes in various Harry Potter films. The City Museum and Art Gallery has undergone a facelift thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund and reopened in August 2011. New and amazing displays and exhibits are now open and include a Roman kitchen and medieval street scene, a dinosaur display, a Gloucester night garden and a Café. The city’s Folk Museum in Westgate Street tells the story of Gloucester’s social history. The Folk Museum too recently enjoyed a makeover, adding a ‘Retro Room’, a fantastic ‘country kitchen‘ tea room and a Folk Boutique gift and curiosity shop.
Beatrix Potter is said to have based “The Tailor of Gloucester” on a real life Gloucestershire tailor and her own Gloucestershire Museum and Shop is worth a visit. There are all sorts of Roman, Tudor and Saxon relics and building remnants all across England, but few places can boast the range of historic buildings and sites that Gloucester has to offer. Gloucester is quite rightly considered to be one of England’s top historic destinations with more than 500 listed buildings.
Sport fans will know that Gloucester Rugby Club is certainly a unique English rugby club. Founded in 1873 and its Kingsholm Stadium situated near the heart of the city, the club enjoys an enviably close relationship with its supporters.
People linked to Gloucester include the actor, comedian and writer Simon Pegg, John Stafford Smith - composer of the Star Spangled Banner and Dick Whittington - Mayor of London from the famous story. Notable inventors from the area include Hubert Cecil Booth - inventor of the vacuum cleaner.
In 1580 Gloucester was awarded the status of a port by Queen Elizabeth I. Even today, the Gloucester Docks are a unique and inspiring destination. The Gloucester Quays area is a favourite for visitors and locals alike providing a great mix of waterside museums, bars, cafes, restaurants, antiques centre and shopping centre, all nestling comfortably alongside the docks’ maritime heritage.
