A Bit About Grantham

Grantham is a market town within the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It bestrides the East Coast Main Line railway (London-Edinburgh), the historic A1 main north-south road, and the River Witham. Grantham is located approximately 26 miles (42 km) south of the city of Lincoln and approximately 24 miles (39 km) east of Nottingham.

With good rail and road links it is a major transport hub for the region. Historically the towns’ economy was based upon engineering and manufacturing and this continues today with its diverse range of manufactured products including textiles, food, timber and plastics. High-tech and service sector industries have grown rapidly in recent years with tourism also on the increase.

The town is best known as the birthplace of former Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher and the place where Isaac Newton went to school. Along with archaeology and social history information you can see exhibits on its 2 famous residents at the Grantham museum. Grantham is within short walking distance of an ancient Roman road and was the scene of Oliver Cromwell's first advantage over Royalists during the English Civil War at Gonerby Moor.

Other attractions include Belvoir Castle (pronounced Beever.) One of the great visitor attractions in the castle grounds is the medieval jousting tournaments and battle re-enactments which are held regularly. Woolsthorpe Manor is a peaceful 17th-century farmhouse which was the birthplace of the renowned scientist Sir Isaac Newton in 1642. It was here that Newton began his lifelong obsession with how things work and visitors can see his childhood scribbles still visible on the walls. When Newton returned to Woolsthorpe in 1665, to escape the plague, he came upon the theory of gravity after witnessing an apple falling from a tree in the garden.

Grantham has much Military History. RAF Spitalgate trained pilots during both world wars and although has never been an operational fighter or bomber base, it did see operational service during the 1943 invasion of Europe as a base for American and Polish gliders and parachutists. It officially closed in 1974 and is now a Territorial Army barracks. The RAF Regiment was formed just north east of the town in parts of Londonthorpe and Harrowby. Grantham is also notable as being the first place in the world to recruit and train women police officers in 1914.

Grantham is famous for its Gingerbread which is quite unlike other gingerbreads. It is said that gingerbread originated in the town in 1740. Also the unique character of Grantham gingerbread was the result of a mistake by a man called William Egglestone who accidentally put some of the wrong ingredients into the cake he was baking at his Grantham home. This accident created Grantham gingerbread. Although well known, the Grantham gingerbread is not celebrated in the town by local shops, cafes, restaurants or its Saturday markets. In fact, it is not produced commercially. The main reference to it locally is now as the nickname of Grantham Town Football Club.
