Lincolnshire, (abbreviated Lincs) is a county in the east of England. It borders Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Rutland, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire to the north. It also borders Northamptonshire in the south for just 19 metres (20 yards), England's shortest county boundary.
The history of Lincoln begins at Brayford Pool, a natural harbour on the River Witham. There was an Iron-Age settlement here around 100BC, known as "Lindun", or "The place by the pool". When the Romans invaded England they recognised the importance of the place and established a garrison. They renamed the city "Lindum" and later "Lindum Colonia", from which derives our modern name of "Lincoln".
Lincoln is home to an appealing variety of historic buildings, museums, and interesting sightseeing opportunities, none more beautiful than Lincoln Cathedral. This magnificent structure 3rd largest cathedral in Britain, is among the most stunning Gothic buildings in the United Kingdom. The fine medieval church dominates the Lincoln skyline thanks to its perch at the top of Steep Hill. Steep by name and definitely steep by nature, Steep Hill is a very popular tourist street consisting of independent shops, tea rooms and pubs. Shopping in Lincoln includes convenient options such as national chain stores for basics but a detour to the downtown or historic district will offer unique gifts, trinkets, antiques and art. Lincolnshire was home to many Bomber Command airfields during the Second World War, giving rise to a nickname of 'Bomber County'. Lincoln Cathedral was an easily recognisable landmark for crews returning from raids over Germany and Occupied Europe and as such took on much importance to the men. The station badge for the nearby RAF Waddington depicts Lincoln Cathedral rising through the clouds, a sight which returning bomber crews used to help find their way back to Waddington's airfield. Appropriately, the Cathedral currently has the only memorial in the United Kingdom dedicated to Bomber Command in the Second World War. There can be few cities that can match Lincoln’s juxtaposition of ancient and modern. The Collection of which the Usher Gallery is now a part, is an important attraction. Housed partly in a recently opened, purpose-built venue, it currently contains over 2,000,000 objects, and was one of the four finalists for the 2006 Gulbenkian Prize. Any material from official archaeological excavations in Lincolnshire is eventually deposited in The Collection so it is growing all the time.
Tranquil destinations close by include Whisby Nature Reserve and Hartsholme Park, while noisier entertainment can be found at Waddington airfield, Scampton airfield (base of the RAF's Red Arrows jet aerobatic team), the County Showground or the Cadwell Park motor racing circuit near Louth.Lincoln holds an annual Christmas Market in and around the Castle grounds. The market is based on the traditional German-style Weihnachtsmarkt as found in several German cities.
Lincoln has a colourful past that is preserved in a fascinating variety of historic buildings, particularly ancient medieval ones.
