A Bit About Newark

Newark, or its full title, Newark-on-Trent is a picturesque market town in Nottinghamshire. It is situated in the East Midlands area of the country and it stands on the River Trent. It is full of history, interesting buildings and museums. The A1 which is on the route of the ancient Great North Road and the East Coast Main Line both make it easily accessible in terms of visiting and commuting.

The town is said to have originated from the Roman times as its location is close to the famous Roman road, the Fosse Way. But its most famous period was during the Civil War where it was said to have a mighty Royal stronghold and the town withstood 3 sieges. The remains of that time can be seen all over the town in the form of its castle ruins and other historical buildings. The castle was started in 1123 and built overlooking the river. It housed various people in history but was ordered to be destroyed in 1646. The demolition commenced but was not completed due to the outbreak of the plague. The ruins are still there to be seen and in 2000 a Heritage Lottery Fund allowed the grounds to be refurbished.

Newark has a lovely cobbled market place where you can buy lots of different produce and gifts. Beautiful architecture adorns the market square where you can also recharge your batteries by sampling the hot food and refreshments on offer. There are several churches in Newark including the Grade1 listed parish church, St. Mary Magdalene. The church played an integral part in Newark’s wool trade as the 20 chapels inside the church were found by the wool merchants.

There are also several museums which will give you an insight into Newark’s involvement in trade and social standing throughout the centuries. The Newark Town Hall, Museum and Art Gallery houses a good collection of Art that has either links to the area or has been produced by local artists. The Millgate museum has a 70,000 strong collection with items of Natural History, Art, Archaeology and Military interest. They offer various tours and information programmes to suit everyone. In addition, the district of Newark and Sherwood is said to have been where Robin Hood robbed from the rich and gave to the poor.

If the Arts are more your thing, then take a trip to the Palace Theatre where there is a wonderful selection of shows for all tastes and ages. The theatre holds weekly Jazz sessions and has a thriving and vibrant Youth Theatre section. After a busy day seeing the sites and before you catch a show, Newark has a wealth of gourmet restaurants, teashops and cafes for you to sit and relax in. Many of the outlets use locally farmed or produced foods. Look out for awards in some of the establishments. Newark boasts awards for Top Tea Place, Best Out of Town Restaurant and Best Newcomer Farm Shop of the Year to name but a few!
