A Bit About Sleaford

Situated 13 miles northeast of Grantham and seventeen miles west of Boston, Sleaford is in North Kesteven district in Lincolnshire. This is one of the oldest towns of England and its name comes from the old English terms esla forde which means ford over a muddy stream. The muddy stream referred here is now called the River Slea. References to this town appears as early as 852 as Slioford.

Though originally an agricultural town Sleaford houses some of the famous seed companies today including Hubbard and Phillips, Sharpes International Seeds, etc. This agricultural town is now shedding its original agricultural flavour and turning into one of the top tourist and craft destination. Many modern buildings that are seen today in Sleaford are recent developments starting from 2000. Situated in the south of the intersection of the A17 and A15 at the Holdingham roundabout, this town is well connected in terms of transport. This town has a three platform railway station. River Slea is also used for transportation but currently only Canoes ply in this river. This town has well planned several cycle-paths. Sleaford has many private nurseries and pre-school age children including Happy Day Nursery, Sleaford Day Nursery and Woodside Children’s Nursery. Some of the famous primary schools include Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Primary School, St. Botolph’s Church of England Primary School and the William Alvey Church of England School. This town also has number of good secondary schools. Now that Sleaford is becoming one of the famous tourist spots in London, it has number of places of interest including the Hub National Centre for Craft and Design with galleries and studio space. Sleaford has also a famous wild life area. Sleaford markets operate on three days per week, Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. The Water Festival which is a local music festival is very famous in the UK and it attracts a lot of crowd each year. Sleaford is also a very residential town for people that like a quite town to raise their family. Some of the most prominent landmarks of this town include St. Denys Church in the eastern side of the market place, Cogglesford Mill on the banks of the River Slea of the 17th Century. Sleaford’s Bull and Dog Pub has the oldest bull-baiting pub sign in England. Money’s Mill of 1796 is in the centre of the town. Handley Monument, the Picutredrome, pool hall, Flicks night club are other interesting places in Sleaford. Of course not to forget The Bass Maltings, which is one of the famous shopping centres. The Bass Maltings also houses many residential flats.

Sleaford is growing fast both as a residential town and as a tourist spot of London. Many tour operators have started including this town in their tour packages attracting more tourists to this town. The well connectedness of this town by road and rail makes attracts many residents to settle in this quite town. Sleaford also has its good eating places and shopping zones to cater to the needs of the residents. It is a self contained town.
